Connecting People with their St Kitts & Nevis Heritage

In the bustling city of Birmingham, England, a passionate group is weaving a vibrant tapestry of cultural pride and community spirit. The Association of St Kitts and Nevis Descendants, fondly known as ASKaND, was formed in 2022 by individuals dedicated to preserving the rich heritage of St Kitts and Nevis. Their mission is clear: to ensure that the traditions, values, and stories of the islands are not only kept alive but passed down intact to future generations. What started as a small initiative has grown into a thriving community hub, attracting like-minded individuals eager to celebrate and contribute to their shared heritage.

ASKaND has quickly become a cornerstone of the St Kitts and Nevis diaspora in Birmingham, organising a diverse array of events that cater to all ages. During school holidays, they host engaging activities for children, creating a love for their cultural roots from a young age. Their Health & Wellbeing Day provide valuable resources and information, while discussion forums tackle important topics such as "What it means to be of St Kitts-Nevis descent" and "What is a Healthy Relationships?” discussing themes around domestic abuse. These initiatives create spaces for learning, connection, and support, strengthening community bonds.

The annual St Kitts and Nevis Heritage Day, held every August, is a standout event. Inspired by the vibrant celebrations of Culturama in Nevis and Carnival in St Kitts, this day is a jubilant explosion of culture. Attendees enjoy heritage workshops, games with a St Kitts and Nevis theme, traditional island food, refreshing drinks, and music that gets everyone moving. In just a few years, this event has become a highly anticipated event, drawing the community together in a celebration of shared identity and pride.

ASKaND’s commitment extends beyond Birmingham to the islands themselves. The group has made significant contributions by donating essential equipment to support health and sports initiatives. Notably, they provided two medical-grade, portable blood pressure monitors with arm cuffs ranging from neonatal to large adult, enhancing healthcare access. Additionally, they donated 90 netballs to support the Federation’s efforts to promote netball on the islands. These contributions reflect ASKaND’s dedication to giving back to their homeland.

One of ASKaND’s most remarkable achievements is its influence on younger generations. Since the group’s formation, there has been a noticeable increase in young people seeking St Kitts and Nevis citizenship, reflecting a renewed connection to their heritage. Even more striking, several young individuals have taken the bold step of relocating to the islands, inspired by the strong sense of identity and community developed by ASKaND’s activities. This trend highlights the group’s success in making the culture and heritage of St Kitts and Nevis resonate with the youth, encouraging them to explore and embrace their roots.

The Association of St Kitts and Nevis Descendants is more than a community group; it is a family dedicated to preserving the vibrant heritage of St Kitts and Nevis. Through their engaging events, meaningful contributions, and focus on community cohesion, ASKaND is ensuring that the diaspora remains deeply connected to their roots. Their success in inspiring younger generations to embrace their heritage, seek citizenship, and even relocate to the islands is a testament to their impact. As ASKaND continues to grow, it remains a beacon of cultural pride and unity, creating a lasting legacy for the St Kitts and Nevis community in Birmingham and beyond.
